Weatherproofing Your Roof: Preparing for the Changing Seasons

Roof with issues

Central Florida residents are no strangers to extreme weather conditions and must rely on their roofs to keep them safe during stormy seasons. However, if your roof is neglected, it may not be able to withstand the constant barrage of heat, wind, rain, and hail that can occur throughout the changing seasons. Here are some roof weatherproofing tips to help your roof combat severe weather year-round.

Roof Weatherproofing Tips

  • Cut Back Long Tree Branches: A heavy tree branch is one of the biggest enemies of a residential roof during storm season. Strong winds can easily break off a tree limb during a heavy storm or hurricane. If a fallen tree branch lands on your roof hard enough, it can puncture a hole that allows water to pour into your home or lead to roof collapse. If you have large trees surrounding your property, trim back any branches that hang over your roof before the storm season begins. Most roofers recommend that tree branches should extend no closer than eight feet from your roof at all times.
  • Removing Roof Debris: Even if you are vigilant about trimming down trees before major storms, intense winds can still blow loose branches and foliage onto your roof. Not only can the weight of leaves and heavy tree branches be dangerous for particularly weak roofs, but the accumulation of debris on roofs and in gutters can cause water to back up and pool. Water pooling on your roof can lead to mold and mildew growth, saggy roofing, and potential leaks.
  • Consider Adding Insulation: While most Floridians are typically only concerned about hurricane season, there are also a few things that can be done to weatherproof your roof ahead of the colder months. For example, adding insulation to your roof can both keep warmth inside of your home and prevent your roof from warping due to rapid changes in the temperature. Additionally, lining your roof and gutters with heat tape can help prevent any accumulated moisture or pooled water from freezing on your roof.
  • Replace Broken Shingles: It is always a good idea to have your roof professionally inspected after a serious storm. If you find any broken, cracked, chipped, or missing roof shingles, be sure to have them repaired or replaced to prevent water from seeping into your home. If fallen debris has compromised the integrity of your roof, have any areas of exposure sealed with a tarp until emergency roofing services can repair the puncture and stop any leaks.
