How to Repair Shingles on Your Roof

At some point in your roof’s two-decade lifespan, you’ll likely deal with a damaged or broken shingle or two. When this happens, it is important to take action as soon as possible to minimize the potential accumulation of damage. If you need to repair shingles on the roof, here are a few ways you can go about it.

Assessing the Damage

Not all shingle repairs are identical. For example, dealing with a shingle that has a missing piece is going to require a different repair process than just a cracked roof shingle. So, when attempting any type of shingle repair, you must first assess the extent of the damage present. When doing this, make sure you are mindful of your safety by properly setting up your ladder, and wearing protective gloves and secure shoes when on the roof.

Replacing Fragmented Roof Shingles

If you find a shingle on your roof with a piece or two missing, it’s time to replace that shingle completely. When you repair shingles on the roof that are broken, you must be mindful not to damage the other intact shingles surrounding the broken one. First, you must use a pry bar to remove the nails from the damaged shingle. Then, after replacing the broken shingle with a new shingle, secure it in place by hammering in an entirely new set of nails.

Repairing Cracked Shingles

If all of the pieces of a damaged shingle are present, you can just repair it instead of replacing it. To do this, you’ll need a strong sealant and a putty knife. All you have to do is spread the sealant under the crack in the shingle, press the shingle into the sealant, and then spread a layer of sealant on top of the crack. While a glued-together shingle may not look the prettiest, it is an entirely functional repair method that will likely go unnoticed from the ground.
